Get HTTPS Now & Increase your Google Rankings

Increase your Google Rankings with HTTPS

Just recently, i am sure you have heard people telling you to switch your website from HTTP to HTTPS.

Did you hear about it?

Last January 2017, i have myself converted over hundreds of Company Website (for my clients) from http:// to https://.

Google announced that webmasters / website owners who do not have a Security Encryption (i.e https / ssl certificate ) could see their websites fall down drastically on Google Rankings.

Without HTTPS which is a ranking signal , could simply mean : Less Traffic to your website, Less Business, Less Money.

Don’t you want to make Money? I am sure you do!

SSL Certificate Importance

Years ago, HTTPS was used only for E Commerce websites like Amazon, Ebay. This was used on their payment gateway pages for secure transactions.

Now Google is urging every website owners to use HTTPS. This has been very confusing for my clients and am sure for you too.

Can a product that cost $100/year boost up my traffic? Is it worth it? Should i change my website to https?

Let us look at the For and Against arguments. But first of all, what is HTTPS?

What is HTTPS and why you need it?

HTTP stands for Hypertext Transfer Protocol. It’s a protocol that allows communication between different systems.

In the most simple case, it is used for transferring data from a Web Server to a Browser to view Web Pages. Http (without the “s”) is not encrypted, it simply means it is not secure.

And when people comes to your website, enters their email, password or credit card, these information can be intercepted by third parties wishing to cause harm, such as a HACKER.

So, personally i think that people who sees a website which is not secure (no secure encription), will run away from it.

Should you change your website to https? I firmly believe YES.

To avoid this, you need to convert your website to https.

The Big Question is : How do i convert my website to https?

The Short Answer is : CONTACT US and we will do the needful for you ($60 – $130), depending on the size of your website.

Yognel https SSL Certificate

The Long Answer : You need to have an SSL Certificate (Depending on your website, the price varies), which creates an encrypted connection between the web server and the web browser.

Without https, any data passed is insecure and can be intercepted by hackers.

Steps for switching Website to HTTPS

If you are computer savvy, i.e you know the backend of your website, the server and JS files, switching your website to HTTPS can be very straightforward by following these steps:

  1. Purchase an SSL certificate and a dedicated IP address from your hosting company.
  2. Install and configure the SSL certificate.
  3. Perform a full back-up of your site in case you need to revert back.
  4. Configure any hard internal links within your website, from HTTP to HTTP S.
  5. Update any code libraries, such as JavaScript, Ajax and any third-party plugins.
  6. Redirect any external links you control to HTTP S, such as directory listings.
  7. Update htaccess applications, such as Apache Web Server, NAMECHEAP and your internet services manager function (such as Windows Web Server), to redirect HTTP traffic to HTTP S.
  8. If you are using a content delivery network (CDN), update your CDN’s SSL settings.
  9. Implement 301 redirects on a page-by-page basis.
  10. Update any links you use in marketing automation tools, such as email links.
  11. Update any landing pages and paid search links.
  12. Set up an HTTP S site in Google Search Console and Google Analytics.

For some websites, the complete steps above will not be necessary, as i said it all depends on the complexity of your website.

The SLL Certificates are expensive, one of the many reasons could be that during the process, there are some verification of identity that needs to be done, like where you live, your real name, your company, registered number an so on.

If ever you feel that you can mess up with the switching to https, i would advise you to hire an experience web designer to do this. ( You can contact us )

Scenario 1 : Switching to HTTPS

The simple reason you need to think is that : OK, I NEED TO MAKE MY WEBSITE SECURE. Sure, there are limits to this. HTTPS is not like a web application firewall. It’s not going to prevent your website from getting hacked. It’s not going to stop phishing emails getting sent, either.

If you have a website that requires a login and passowrd, such as being used by wordpress, joomla and other content management systems, then this is the minimum security that you can offer to your visitors. An SSL Certificate also bring trust to your visitors.

NOTE: If you say you don’t care what google says, fine. But note that Google is planning to name all website without https as NOT SECURE. So imagine a visitor coming to your website and see it written as NOT SECURE? Then you will probably change your mind. But its going to be too late, your website will drop down in Google Rankings. So better do it now!

Security Encryption

According to research performed by NAMECHEAP, more than 80 percent of respondents would Abandon a Purchase (i.e they would go away from your website) if there was no “HTTPS” in use.

Ok, suppose you don’t sell anything, you just have a personal website / blog. Would you not want to have many people visiting your website? There is evidence that the use of security seals can improve lead generation by over 40 percent.

It is not only your visitors who pay attention to your website, but the Giant Google also keeps an eye over Security, that is why Google has place Https to be a Ranking Factor on its Search Engine.

Scenario 2 : NOT Switching to HTTPS

Recent research have show that small B2B websites are taking time to switch to https. Many website owners, who do not have a vast knowledge of how Search Engines work, prefer not to switch their website to https. The reasons given are mostly as follows :

  1. I have paid many $ to get a great rankings on Google and if i change to https, i may lose all my great rankings.
  2. I don’t see the importanc of it, as i am already making lot’s of money.
  3. Why should i fix something that is not broken yet?

We believe that this is a lack of awareness of the growing importance of an SSL Certificate or these website owners perceive “switching to https” as being complex. And in particular they fear it to have a negative impact on their SEO rankings.

There may be other factors, such as on page optimization, number of Google reviews, total number of pages and the number of backlinks, had far more bearing on a high ranking than switching to HTTPS.

In short, a conclusion can be taken out, the https factor is not of great importance to these website owners now, because nothing is yet broken. So they are living their great days.

My personal view is that, may be you are not seeing any negative impact from not using https, but this comes with a great Health Warning. Failure to NOT switching to https can leave you shocked when there is a sudden change in the algorithm.

A worst case scenario can be a suden drop of all your rankings overnight. If you had 20,000 visitors a day, that could drop to 20 visitors a day. What will you do then?

without https no seo rankings

Google’s notice of mobile friendliness gives SOME reassurance that this wouldn’t happen overnight. (let’s hope so)

So my kind advice would be to hire an experienced Web Designer who is very at ease with SEO to make the changes for you. He could switch to https without any loss of SEO rankings.

The BAD News

There is no going away from NOT switching to https. This is going to be the NORM, OBLIGATION on every website sooner or later.

https is an obligation

You need to start planning it rather to just move your eyes or ears away from what you are seeing and hearing.
